Tutorial on How to install GeeXboX and stream videos from computers on your Windows network to your Wii.

I take no responsibility for anything bad that may happen to your Wii as a result of this. I think this is relatively safe because all it involves is copying another app to your SD card and running it. However, I am unaware of any risk and do not know enough to provide support for failed installs. This worked flawlessly the first time I tried it.

Note: This is all homebrew / softmodding. Nothing here has anything to do with the operation of the WODE. This tutorial does not even require a WODE be installed.

I have decided to write this because if people are going to install the Homebrew Channel and DVDx, I figure that they might as well take advantage of some of the other features offered by HBC/DVDx.

STEPS

SHARE A FOLDER ON ONE OF YOUR WINDOWS COMPUTERS

1) Right click the folder you want to share and pick "Sharing and Security..." (In WinXP)
2) Check "Share this folder on the network" and Click "OK"

PUT GEEXBOX ON YOUR WII SD CARD (the one that has /apps/ and /wodemenu/ on it)

1) Install HBC/DVDx per Aethers tutorial
2) Download GeeXbox for Wii. I used the IOS version (0.1beta3), not the MINI version because I do not have bootmii installed as boot2 or IOS.
3) Unzip geexbox-wii-ios-0.1beta3.tar.bz2. Unzip geexbox-wii-ios-0.1beta3.tar.
4) Copy the /geexbox/ folder from the unzipped /apps/ folder to your SD card /apps/ folder.
5) Copy the /GEEXBOX/ folder to the root of your sd card. Your SD card should look like this:

6) Plug your SD card back into your Wii. You can now launch GeeXbox as well as wodemenu from HBC. That is all that needs to be done on the Wii side. No further installation is necessary.

7) Power on your Wii. Open the HomeBrew Channel. You should now have GeeXboX as well as WodeMenu.

8) Load GeeXboX.

9) Once the menu is up, pick "OPEN"

10) Pick "OPEN FILE..."

11) You should see "FRONTSD" and "SHARES". If you do not see "SHARES", it may be that GeeXboX needs more time to read your shared files on your Windows network. Go back one menu level and then pick "OPEN FILE..." again. On my system, it takes a bit (up to a minute or so).

Image

12) You should see all of your computers which have shared files. Currently on my network, I have my computer named "BLUEGLOW" with shared folders and my computer named "GREENGLOW" with shared folders.

Image

13) On BLUEGLOW, I have one shared folder. It is named "Shared".

Image

14) Pick any image / video file in your shared directory and wait 10 seconds or so for it to load.

Image

Image

15) Watch. You can press the left arrow on your D-Pad to get to many menu options and settings.

Image

16) You can now play videos from your computer on your Wii. This can play divx/xvid videos.

Just to check:
  1. You had HBC installed
  2. You copied the /geexbox/ folder to your apps folder
  3. You copied the /GEEXBOX/ folder to your root directory
  4. You launched GeeXboX via HBC and just get loads of code?
If so, I'm wondering if it is conflicting with previous mods? (if any) Other than that, I'm not sure.

1.Yes
2.Yes
3.Yes
4.Yes

No other mods installed apart from Wode menu.

I might try with a different SD card, There may be some conflict with SDHC cards.

I use a SDHC micro SD card in an adapter so the SDHC should work. But, it's worth a shot, due to my limited knowledge of the subject I can't think of anything else.

I'm very curious about doing this and you have made an excellent tutorial. I have a few questions though. Besides DivX and Xvid files can I stream original DVD movies? Are there any framerate problems when watching movies? Does the audio sync with the video just fine? And last but not least is there any loss of video quality? Thanks in advance.

I believe to play your DVD iso's, you will need to perform more advanced softmodding.

From my GeeXboX link:
Quote:
GeeXboX for Wii (IOS) is basically the continuation of previous 0.1alpha releases and has to be launched by, preferrably, HBC or other similar homebrew loading methods. This version does not support native wifi or DVD; does not support USB 2.0; does not support front SD slot hot-swapping; does support returning to HBC.

GeeXboX for Wii (MINI) is basically the IOS version modified to take advantage of MINI firmware and has to be launched through MINI, i.e. manually from Bootmii GUI or automatically by replacing ppcboot.elf in bootmii folder. This version does support native wifi (currently at a rather low speed); does support USB 2.0; does support front SD slot hot-swapping; does support native DVD; does not support returning to HBC.

I didn't use the MINI version since I didn't want to get that deep into softmodding. I believe Aether boots DVD iso's and plays them with the Wii, but I don't know what he uses.

All you need to play a DVD Movie ISO is a WODE, the Homebrew Channel, DVDx, and the homebrew app MPlayer_ce.

Would that be DVDx as we installed DVDx in your tutorial? Or actually a DVDx app?
